Aspen Gay and Lesbian Scene

(Aspen, Colorado - CO, USA)

The USA is now a particularly gay friendly, accepting country, and within the small town of Aspen, visitors of all persuasions are welcomed. However, due to its size, this is certainly not a hotspot for LGBT activity and partying. That said, there are a number of mixed bars where you can party all night, and of course, there is that legendary Aspen Gay and Lesbian Ski Week each January, which draws as many as 5,000 visitors to this famous resort.

While there is no real gay center here, hotels, bars and clubs are all very welcoming when it comes to same-sex couples. The real draw cards here are the Colorado peaks and the scenery around the Roaring Fork Valley, which is breathtaking whatever the time of the year. As well as skiing and snowboarding, other possibilities include dog sledding, cross-country hiking trails, rides on snowmobiles and also guided tours, which come complete with the necessary snow-shoes.

During the summer months, many gay couples enjoy a romantic break in Aspen, possibly soaring to the skies in a hot-air balloon. The more adventurous can even partake of white-water rafting on the Colorado River. And at the end of the evening, consider a night of dancing and drinking at the Belly Up nightclub on South Galena Street, which is to be found just a block away from Wagner Park and is packed with themed events, all through the year.

Aspen Gay Ski Week

For many, the Aspen Gay and Lesbian Ski Week in January is the highlight of the year and this event functions as an important fundraiser for both the Roaring Fork Gay and Lesbian Community, as well as the AspenOUT organization.

First held in the late 1970s and now taking place each year in the middle of January, Ski Week is actually the oldest gay event of its kind in the whole of the United States. It usually runs from Sunday to Sunday and has become an international event of some standing, with much to enjoy throughout the week, including regular shows at the historic Wheeler Opera House on Hyman Avenue.

Ski Week proceedings get underway with an Opening Party on the first night, which is followed by a film gala, party nights at Escobar and the Regal, comedy showcases at various venues around Aspen, and a fashion show. Also worth looking out for is the Dance Gala at Hotel Jerome, the Pool Party at the Aspen Recreation Center, and the Top of the Mountain Party, which begins with a gondola ride in the moonlight.
